"30" A Self Portrait Series
As I approached my 30th birthday I knew I wanted to shoot a self-portrait project. This came about as a desire to reflect on my thoughts and feelings about getting older as well as an opportunity to shoot a self portrait project which I had never done before. Little did I know that one month before my birthday my life would be turned upside down by the sudden passing of my mother. This left me completely devastated. Determined to keep working and creating art, this project still had the same ideas at its core but there was the added layer of being thrust into what felt like real womanhood without my strongest female influence to guide me. With the help of my husband, we worked together to create the images I imagined. Uncertainty, grief, optimism, and changing priorities are all emotions and ideas explored through this series. Sand dunes, skies, and water are an ideal setting, filled with mystery, change, history and the beginning of new life.
